The aim of this paper is to investigate the relevance between lexical meanings of words and the syntactic structure in Korean. Hereby I concentrate on analyzing meanings and comparing the syntactic structures of two synonym verbs, ‘놓다(nohda)’ and ‘두다(duda)’, which are three-place predicates. I hypothesized that the order of arguments is affected by the lexical meaning of both verbs which are predicates, and nouns which are the arguments. In this paper, I argue that a syntactic structure of a verb is affected by a lexical meaning and semantic structure of a verb. In addition, the selection of specific nouns as an argument can influence on the order of arguments syntactically. In case ‘놓다(nohda)’ and ‘두다(duda)’ accompany with a substantival noun or a place-indicating noun, the verb is used in its basic meaning and keeps its basic syntactic structure. However, the order of arguments can be changed if nouns as an argument are restricted number or abstract nouns. All of these results indicate that lexical meaning of words and syntactic structure are closely interrelated. (Yonsei University)
