초록

This study describes various pragmatic aspects of the e-mail letters by Korean college students disapproving and asking to clarify or adjust their grades. This routine linguistic behavior as a distinctive communicative event is rather a recent phenomenon, which reflects the students' aspiration to secure distinguished credits as well as the changed attitudes and infra-structures of the academic communities. Basically from an ethnographic perspective, the present study analyzes the overall structure of the letter and various pragmatic aspects of the main argument including their rhetorical and linguistic politeness strategies. The results show that, the style was fairly formal and the students were generally polite in making their points, trying to balance the conflicting pragmatic principles, ‘be clear’ and ‘be polite’. The female students, however, disclosed slightly more direct and affective orientation in their appeal. (Hanyang Women's University)
