Abstract

This thesis is the first analysis of the process of Kim Sa Ryang, a famous modern novelist of the late Japanese ruling period, creating many plays and the value and meaning of his comedy Dobongi & Baebaengi'. Kim Sa Ryang first got acquainted with Japanese modern plays when he was a youth studying in Japan. and came to know about plays in the process of experiencing his own novels were dramatized. Later he began to create his plays while communicating with An Young Il, a talented Chosun director, and Murayama(村山知義), an elder Japanese director. Especially from 1945 to 1950, he wrote his major plays, of which the most representative is the comedy Dobongi & Baebaengi. This study results in that we can evaluate Kim Sa Ryang to be one of the representative playwrights of the 1940s, and his comedy Dobongi & Baebaengi also to be one of the most significant works in the history of modern Korean plays. This comedy shows the perfect five acts of play structure, and makes use of the creating techniques of arousing interests and inducing tactions. This comedy follows the basic principle of comedy that a young couple who would like to get married, after going through difficulties owing to the objections of the older generation, finally succeeds in getting married in the end. In addition, this work could fully bring the expectations about the new world to the readers and spectators by making a good use of those play structural elements. This play also actively took advantage of various folk tales ,and as a result, this paly can be recognized.
