초록
This study focuses on the years between the 1910s to 20s when East Asia was facing cultural innovation phase and both Korea and Japan was struggling political and cultural chaos of comedy and tragedy to diachronically analyze the meaning and the establishment of Korean and Japanese drama. In early modern Korea and Japan, the movement towards modern culture was happening on a large scale. Singeki Drama was popular among young scholars in Korea and Japan during the 1910s and 20s as a method to express one’s ego. As Korea was suppressed by Japan during this particular time, modern drama popularized approximately 10 years after it was established in Japan. Modern drama movement expanded in Japan under a liberal democratic trend called “Taisho Democracy,” but at the same period of time, New-school Drama which was made in Japan in 1896 was introduced falsely to Korea as modern plays. Modern drama movements started to begin in earnest in Korea during the 1920s while the interest in the “generation of play” of Taisho began declining and young novelists started concentrating on writing novels and giving up writing plays. Meanwhile in Korea, modern drama became more and more popular and came to its maturation period in the 1930s publishing various creative and experimental plays and cultivating play writers through literary contests in spring. This contrasting aspect of Korea and Japan continued throughout the 1930s and the 1940s. Afterwards, Korea and Japan started creating modern plays in their own unique style reflecting each one’s own history and culture.
