Abstract

Yihaeryongjeon is a novel about filial behavior, dealing with the idea of filial duty and real issues. Since the novel reveals the real issues and idea of filial duty through space, it is inevitable to focus on the progress of space in it. The space moves in the process of "family → country village → royal court" in the novel. One may assume that the status of subject of filial behavior will vary according to the spaces, but it is not the case. The idea of filial duty shows a cumulative trend in reaction to the real issues or melts many different forms into one by penetrating through the entirety of forms. At the core of those forms is "dehumanization." The creative method of dehumanization grants two features to the subject of filial behavior: it either makes one act recklessly, getting on the paradigm of "filial behavior-reward," or continue to "discard humanity" based on the consciousness of lineage. As a result, a romantic equation is established that if one is a devoted son, he will not be human and vice versa. Given that romanticity emerges in the "superiority of ideology about reality" and "the traditional discourse on filial behavior accepted and utilized by the author," it is interpreted that the idea of romantic equation holds hands with romance to cover up the reality.
