Abstract

This paper explores the environment or system that had made the way to birth and growth of film directors in Chosun under Japanese rule. In this paper, the exclusive belongingness system between flim company and directors proved to be the key system that had got the film directors appear and exist in Chosun under Japanese rule. For this system had not only helped them make film, but also affected adversely on them. Actually this system reduced the director’s role and stagnated the market of Chosun－film. At first, the exclusive belongingness system had appeared as material foundation to directors. But some new directors who wanted to be free from material bind attempted changing this system into union of radical ideas voluntarily. After all, this system met an tragic fate after promulgation of Chosun film regulation. It changed into an advance registration system under national censorship. The exclusive belongingness system may be interpreted as a aspect of colonial modernity, for it was not only colonial regulation but also voluntary attempting to be free from the regulation.
