근대 초기 선교사 부인의 저술 활동과 번역가로서의 정체성

식민지 조선에서 ‘서양인 선교사 부인’은 ‘인종적’, ‘종교적’, ‘젠더적’ 정체성을 겹겹이 안고 있는 존재였다. 이들의 집필 활동은 국경과 언어, 장르를 넘나들며 다양하게 이루어졌으나, 서양인 여성이라는 현실적 조건을 활용하여 번역 작업에 가장 집중했다. 이들의 문학/비문학 번역물은 공히 한글 표기를 고수했으며 문장력에 있어서는 남성 공역자들의 것, 예컨대 게일과 이원모의 번역본 보다 나았다. 선교사 부인은 번역의 과정에서 조선인 남성의 도움을 받기도 했는데, 노블 부인의 조사 김태원의 경우를 보면 번역 작업 자체뿐 아니라 출판과 검열 관련 업무까지도 전담했다. 이러한 사례들을 통해 조선인 조사들의 실체와 그 개입의 정도를 일부나마 밝힐 수 있었다. 또한 조선인 화가를 삽화가로 고용하여 서양의 서사를 조선의 풍속화로 표현하거나, 해부도를 그리도록 하는 등 조선 미술계에도 영향을 미쳤다. 번역가로서 선교사 부인은 주로 영국과 미국의 19세기 후반에서 20세기 초의 문학 작품을 번역하여 당시로서의 근간을 선별했고, 죄악을 경계하는 교훈적 소설과 성장소설류를 주로 다루었다. 그 번역물은 번역문학사에서 최초의 혹은 식민지 시기 유일의 번역본이기도 했다. 이들이 남긴 전기물 역시 오늘날 지속적으로 참조가 되는 의미있는 저술들이다. 남성 선교사의 문서 활동이 성경번역, 주석서를 비롯한 종교적 교리서나 학문적 저술 위주로 이루어졌다면 선교사 부인들은 소설, 동화, 전기와 같은 문학 작품의 창작과 번역, 혹은 창가집 등을 담당했다. 무엇보다도 조선 여성의 삶을 다룬 창작/번역 작품들을 다수 남겼다. 이들의 출판물은 학교, 교회, 선교센터, 병원, 감옥 등에 비치되었으며, 교회 목회자들에게도 적극 권고되며 설교와 강연의 자료로 활용되었고, 전도부인ㆍ서적보부상 등을 통해 전국적으로 배포되어 그 영향력은 적지 않았다.
Abstract
The existence of ‘Western Missionary Women’ in the colonial period of Joseon reflected multi-layered identities in a racial, religious and sexual manner. Their diverse writings knew no border of frontier, language and genre but the practical condition of being western women made them concentrated on translations most. Their translation works of literature and non-literature officially kept to the Korean transcription and the writing skills were better than their male co-workers, Mr. Gale and Mr. Won Mo LEE, to name a few. The missionary wives were sometimes helped by the male linguistic assistant of Joseon. In the case of Tae Won KIM who assisted M.W.Noble, his working scope covered even publication and censorship as well as translation itself. These examples helped the author to reveal to a certain extent, the substance of the linguistic assistants of Joseon and their intervention level. Also, Joseon painters were hired as illustrator and asked to depict the western narration into the genre painting of Joseon or to draw an anatomical chart. Consequently, it marked a significant impact on the art industry of Joseon. The missionary wives as translators mainly worked on the literature of the late 19th and the early 20th century of the United Kingdom and the United States of America to lay a foundation of the times. The novels of morality being alert on sins and those of formation were equally treated in the same line. These translations were the first or the only works of the genre during the colonial period. And their biographical writings bear notable significance as the works are still referred to continuously. When the documentary works of male missionaries focused on religious doctrines and academic writings such as Bible translation and annotation readings, the missionary wives rather delved into the creation of literary works and the translation of novel, fairy tale and biography, even treating the song compilations. Above all, numerous works of creation and/or translation were left bearing stories of lives of Joseon women. These publications were displayed at schools, churches, mission venues, hospitals and prisons. Also, they were widely used as materials for sermon and lecture by pastors and distributed nationwide by the wives of preachers and book paddlers. Consequently, the impact of these publications were not negligible.
