초록

This paper aims to examine the overall properties and the types of Russian perception verbs, and to discuss syntactic and semantic differences between their complements. Perception verbs lexicalize along a sense modality hierarchy, which starts with the sense of vision, followed by hearing, touch, smell and taste. This hierarchy does not only reflect the lexicalization sequence of perception verbs follow, but also, reflect the hierarchical tendency of perception verbs to extend into the cognitive domain. Vision verbs express the highest degree of certainty, hearing verbs express internal receptivity and obedience, and verbs of smell express doubt, dislikable mental characteristics. The distance which these three sense modalities are able to cover is connected with 'objectivity' and 'intellect', while closeness that is required especially for the sense modalities of touch and taste is often equated with 'subjectivity', 'intimacy', and 'emotion'. In Russian, как-complement have the restriction that the temporal relationship of the complement and matrix sentence actions is obligatorily understood as simultaneous. The relatively high frequency of cases with absolute tense in как-complements can be explained by the meaning of direct perception connected with this complementizer. The proposition denoting interpretation of a complement is achieved by using the complementizer что. In что-complement the tense form is apparently used relatively. It is suggested that the motivation for using relative tense or absolute tense is semantic expansion of perception verbs.
