초록

This study is mainly based on a manner and result verb dichotomy. It can be said that this dichotomy also plays a role in understanding the semantic, syntactic characteristics of Russian verb bit', as in English. However, 'The manner/result complementarity' and 'The argument realization property of manner/result verbs' in Russian need language specific explanation. Although Russian verb bit' was classified in previous studies as manner verb, I argue that it is a complex verb, including both meanings of manner and result, as verb rezat'(cut), and this semantic characteristic shows various argument realizations. Therefore, in “bit' stekla” verb bit' means 'break by hitting'(i.e. manner + result), then the argument PATIENT of the verb is expressed as in accusative case, although it is inanimate (cf. in "bit' po stolu/ v dver'" verb bit' means 'hit' (manner) with the inanimate surface argument in PP).

Abstract
