호칭어 ‘선생님’에 대한 사회언어학적 연구- 대학에서의 표준형과 변이형 사용을 중심으로 -

Abstract

This study, we examine the different usages and functions of the term ‘seonsangnim’ as a form of address and conduct survey of university students and professors on the cognition(socio-cultural understanding) of this term. Our study consists of three parts: First, we collect the different functions and usages of ‘seinsangnim’ by examining the various meanings and corresponding examples in the ‘Pyojungugeodaesajeon(standard Korean dictionary)’, and the ‘Pyojuneoneoyeojeol(standard Korean language manners)’, which were both compiled by the National Institute of the Korean Language. Second, we analyze the actual usage of the term ‘seonsaengnim’ by examining the usages of colloquial variants such as ‘saem’, ‘ssaem’, ‘saemnim’ from a corpus of cell phone text messages and forum posts from two web portal sites. Third, we investigate the cognition of the term through a questionnaire on various social elements such as gender, age, formal, intimacy and setting. We can conclude that ‘seonsaengnim’ has simple and biased meaning in the dictionary. And Three variants of ‘seonsaengnim’ were used somewhat differently according to people, intimacy, politeness etc. Furthermore, the questionnaire reveals that people use the standard from and variants of ‘seosaengnim’ differently due to social elements.
