Abstract
The study investigates the features of indirect speech, direct speech and free indirect discourse and their relationship. Previous studies explain that they have same origin and their distinct structures are the result of transformation. But their distinct structures do not mean the clear-cut boundary among them. Direct speech has in common with indirect speech in that it conveys not only the content of original speech but also speaker's various attitudes toward the original speech. Indirect speech may give information directly to hearer to help him to understand the situation. This is the reason why Voloshnov "the analysis" is the essence of the indirect speech. Free indirect discourse is a linguistic device for dramatic effect by controlling the distance between the text and the reader. In this sense it is closely connected with indirect speech. At the same time, free indirect discourse has common with direct speech in that both have two deictic centers, and aim at dramatic effect. Unlike direct speech and indirect speech, free indirect discourse are more text dependent, and can be detected only by careful hearers (or readers). As mentioned above, formal differences in these forms of the reported speech shows they have their own distinct functional scopes. That Reported speech is the product of double procedures explains why these seemingly similar forms of reported speech operate on the different levels. Unlike other human behavior, while conveying other's original speech which was already encoded by original speakers, another encoding procedures begins. Thus in reported speech, various speakers, contents, attitudes are involved, and different functional scopes of the forms of reported speech reflect the interaction among these various elements.
