만주 이주 전후 현경준의 연보 보완과 『만선일보』 소재 교육 논설의 발굴

Abstract

This paper aims to complement the chronology of Hyeon Gyeong-jun’s life before and after his migration to Manchuria and to analyse his relationship with his fictions by unearthing his diaries and educational writings, which have been unknown to scholars. Hyeon held three professions: writer, teacher, and journalist. This article reveals that Hyeon worked as a journalist for the Chosun Choong-Ang Ilbo before moving to Manchuria, that he moved to Tumen(圖們) around September 1937 and worked as a teacher at the Baekbong National Superior School in Tumen until the end of July 1940, and that he worked for the Manseonilbo from August 1940. Hyeon Gyeong-jun was the head of the Tumen bureau of the Manseonilbo, and was transferred to the headquarters on 20 October 1940 and worked in the editorial department of the headquarters from 6 November. As a teacher and journalist in Manchuria, Hyeon’s authentic and conscious sense of place in Tumen was acquired through his experience teaching students in the poor educational conditions of the emerging city and covering the miserable lives of migrants from close quarters. Hyeon’s sense sense of reality critique and investigative journalism is reflected in his participation in educational movements and his writing of educational articles and fictions. His professional activities take the form of publicising the problems of schools in Manchuria, especially in Tumen. The transformation from a prefectural teacher to a fallen teacher in his fictions also reflects his disillusionment with the reality of schools in Manchuria. Therefore, Hyeon’s geographical and professional mobility refers not only to his spatial movement to Manchuria, but also to the practicality of writing as a way of participating in or helping to transform the space of Manchuria.
