본 연구는 대학 글쓰기 교육에서 ChatGPT를 활용한 요약 글쓰기의 효과와 활용 방안을 탐색하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 요약은 단순한 정보 축약이 아니라 텍스트의 핵심 정보를 선택하고 조직하는 고차원적 인지 활동으로, 비판적 사고 및 논리적 구성을 강화하는 데 중요한 전략이 된다. 최근에는 ChatGPT와 같은 생성형 인공지능 도구가 대량의 텍스트를 신속하게 요약할 수 있는 능력을 갖추면서, 교육 현장에서의 활용 가능성이 주목받고 있다. 이에 본 연구는 ChatGPT가 생성한 요약문과 학생들이 직접 작성한 요약을 비교·분석하여 정확성, 논리적 구조, 표현력 등의 차이를 규명하고자 하였다. 연구 결과, 학생들의 요약문에서는 핵심 개념의 누락이나 논리적 전개의 도약 현상이 다수 관찰되었으나, 이러한 결과는 역설적으로 ChatGPT와의 비교를 통해 학습자들이 자신의 문제의식을 점검하고 성찰하는 메타인지적 기회를 가질 수 있음을 시사한다. 이를 바탕으로 본 연구는 ChatGPT를 요약 교육의 보조 도구로 활용하면서도 학습자들이 비판적 사고를 기를 수 있도록 하는 교육적 접근법을 제안하고자 하였다. 아울러 ChatGPT를 효과적으로 활용하기 위한 가이드라인을 제시하고, 요약 글쓰기 수업에서 ChatGPT의 역할과 윤리적 고려사항을 교육하는 방안을 논의하였다.
Abstract
This study aims to explore the effects and applications of using ChatGPT for summarization in academic writing education at the university level. Summarization is not merely a reduction of information but a higher-order cognitive activity that involves selecting and organizing key information from a text, serving as a crucial strategy for enhancing critical thinking and logical composition. With the recent advancements in AI tools like ChatGPT, which can rapidly generate summaries of large volumes of text, their potential applications in education have been increasing. Therefore, this study compares and analyzes the summaries generated by ChatGPT and those written by students to examine differences in accuracy, logical structure, and expressiveness. The findings indicate that while ChatGPT excels in accuracy and logical coherence, students demonstrate strengths in creativity and critical thinking. Notably, students’ summaries often lacked key concepts and exhibited somewhat fragmented logical flow. In contrast, ChatGPT’s summaries maintained a consistent logical structure but lacked creative expression. Based on these findings, this study proposes an educational approach that integrates ChatGPT as a supplementary tool for summarization training while fostering students’ critical thinking skills. It also discusses guidelines for the effective use of ChatGPT, the role of AI in summarization instruction, and ethical considerations in AI-assisted academic writing.
