Abstract

This article attempts to read 「Bihwamilkyo」 as a work that expresses ‘the thoughts of domination and salvation’, ‘vision of non-systemic utopia’, and ‘thinking about the meaning of literature and novels’, which Lee Chung-joon has continuously explored in various works, in the 1980s, an era of extreme confrontation. 「Bihwamilkyo」 is a work that clearly reveals the close relationship between the ‘vision of a Utopia without domination’, the main theme of Lee Chung-joon’s literature, and the ‘self-consciousness of writing novels’ revealed in the genealogy of novelist novels. The ‘a religious rite’ in the novel at this time is a symbol created by the writer’s consciousness to explore the possibility of utopian salvation in the face of fierce confrontation. It is also a metaphor for the fate of the novelist and the novel, who must continue to write even in such reality. The ‘a religious rite’ is both a metaphor for politics and a metaphor for art (literature). Therefore, 「Bihwamilkyo」 is a political novel in that it asks what a true utopia is in an era of extreme political oppression and conflict, and shows the characteristics of a self-directed artist novel in that it raises questions about the way art and literature exist in that era. And it reveals through double metaphors that the two questions are one after all. This study.
