Abstract

The purpose of this study is to understand the lines of ‘capture’ and ‘flight’ drawn by opium addicts in the novel while contemplating what the space ‘Manchukuo’ specifically represents in Hyeon Kyeong-jun’s Yumaeng means to Koreans and what the opium addiction problem experienced by Koreans in Manchukuo means. To this end, we reinterpreted Yumaeng through the thoughts of Deleuze and Guattari, and highlighted the different life lines depicted by opium addicts Myeong-woo and Kyu-seon in the arrangement of ‘Special Village’, the ruling system of ‘Manchukuo’ and ‘the Making of a Nation’ by Japanese imperialism. First, it was found that Myeong-woo’s will to rehabilitate was ironically re-territorialized as a ‘national state’ by combining the space called ‘Special Village’, which is the ruling system of ‘Manchukuo’ and ‘the Making of a Nation’ implemented by Japanese imperialism. On the other hand, at the end of the Japanese colonial period, Kyu-seon showed an appearance that he was not rehabilitated to the end in the space of ‘Special Village’ of ‘Manchukuo’ and was de-territorialized in the realm of ‘national state’. The difference in the line of life drawn by the opium addicts Myeong-woo and Kyu-seon is not only because Kyu-seon is a ‘protester’ who dreamed of revolution, but also because the meaning of ‘opium’ for Myeong-woo and Kyu-seon is different. For Kyu-seon, opium exists as the only way to keep the past dream of revolution alive, but for Myeong-woo, opium exists as a means to forget the past. Therefore, Kyu-seon does not quit opium and Myeong-woo decides to stay away from opium in order to rehabilitate to the same brilliant life as in the past. In conclusion, unlike Myeong-woo, who was captured in the territory of the ‘national state’ by accepting the logic of rehabilitation, Kyu-seon is not captured by the Japanese ‘the Making of a Nation’ by refusing rehabilitation, but draws a kind of ‘line of flight’ in the territory of the ‘national state’.
