Abstract

This article examines how the narrative of “liberation” in the television drama My Liberation Notes is deeply entangled with the distribution of affect—namely, the hierarchical allocation of emotions and their spatial inscription. The drama’s invocation of liberation is not merely reducible to internal growth or the realization of empathy; rather, it operates as a political affect that functions as a liberal apparatus of governance through an affective geography of extraction. In this context, “non-affect” and “ugly feelings” emerge as invisible affective practices that refuse the affective economy, and Yeom Mi-jeong’s disaffection is interpreted not as emotional absence but as a strategic delay of affective demand—a form of resistance that opens a fissure within the dominant affective regime. Seoul, as a settler-colonial city, turns its suburban peripheries into sites of affective extraction, fixing emotional flows into a return trajectory directed toward the urban center. Within this structure, “intimacy” no longer serves as the key to liberation, but rather functions as a colonial device of the affective economy that governs emotions based on performative affective competence and reduces affect to consumable forms. True liberation, then, is not to be found in inclusive intimacies that obscure affective hierarchies, but in concretizing the potential of counter-affect—emerging from affective remainders—through the political practice of affect.
