Abstract

This study begins by positing certain impasses and difficulties inherent in contemporary literature that attempts to mourn state violence. It aims to identify the nature of these difficulties and to explore possible directions and methods for addressing them anew. Within literature, the relationships between the “event and the victim,” the “victim and the writer,” and the “text (or writer) and the reader” are marked by a certain hierarchy, primarily centered on the gravity of the event and the legitimacy of victimhood. Such hierarchical relations function as a fundamental condition contributing to the current deadlock in mourning literature. In this context, the present study focuses on the aesthetic dimension of literariness—that is, the experiential quality unique to literature—as a potential path forward. It then explores, as tentative methods for concretely realizing this path, the concepts of “mourning mourning” and the “tragic narrative.” The perspective of “mourning mourning” allows us to think of the difficulties implied or evoked in each of the aforementioned relationships not as solvable problems, but as forms of impossibility. The “tragic narrative,” in turn, actualizes this mode of thinking by transforming the task of mourning into an impossibility worthy of impossibility, thereby enabling a literary gesture that mourns the very form of mourning literature itself. Ultimately, this paper carries out a kind of ground-clearing work by prompting a re-recognition of the current impasse not as a challenge to be overcome, but as a condition to be rethought. In doing so, it seeks to liberate mourning literature from hierarchical demands for “better mourning,” and instead advocates for a literature of mourning that, in its own unique position, seeks to perform its task with its own kind of sincerity and singular form.
