This article suggests that the name of ‘G-v’, the narrator of The Possessed, derives from Goryanchikov, the narrator of Notes from the House of the Dead. The theoretical framework of this argument is Narrative Ethics and its main subjects ‘Unreliable narrator.’ Narrative Ethics, a subfield of Narratology, examines the interdependence between narrative structure and Ethics. The technique of the ‘Unreliable narrator’ directs the reader's attention to the narrator and the narration itself, prompting the reader to contemplate the author's perspective on the theme of narration. In Notes from the House of the Dead, the preface raises the reader's doubts about the reliability of the narrator, Goryanchikov, leading to an active reflection on what makes the former prisoner not an ‘Unreliable narrator.’ Dostoevsky disguises Goryanchikov as ‘Unreliable narrator’ to encourage readers, like the narrator, to engage in self-examination. In The Possessed, the narrator is presented an ‘Unreliable narrator’ early in the novel due to his misunderstanding on the events. Despite his claim to be a chronicler, he loses the reader's trust by describing incidents he has not witnessed, thereby prompting readers to adopt a more critical approach to his account. The reader, through this process, recognizes that the narrator's flawed perspective is linked to the tragedy in The Possessed. Toward the end of the novel, however, as G-v appears to realize his own errors, he overlaps with Goryanchikov, making it possible to deduce Goryanchikov as the origin of the name ‘G-v’.
