초록
Based on a comprehensive collection of all the extant Khitan lexical recordsfor “tiger”, this paper makes a detailed collation between the Sino-Khitantranscriptions (i.e., Khitan words in Chinese syllabic records) and thetwo different Khitan scripts, so as to reveal two different Khitan terms for“tiger” etymologically: one as a Turkic-Mongolic isogloss and the otheras a Tungusic-Japonic taboo. And it can be noticed that, in that process, there rises a renewed reconstruction of the Khitan macroscript for “tiger”together with its graphic etymology up to a Chinese character. Such is abifurcation of one sememe also in Khitan vocabulary, indicative of thecomplexity of Khitan etymology.
