이 글은 공동체주의와 서사적 정체성에 대하여 비판적으로 검토한 것이다. 공동체주의가 등장하여 도덕의 위기와 자아정체성 상실을 문제 삼으면서 자유주의적 진보주의 교육의 실패에 대하여 통렬하게 비판하고 그 대안으로 아리스토텔레스적인 덕 교육의 부활을 강력하게 제기한다. 우리의 도덕교육도 7차 교육과정이후 덕 교육이 강조되는 등 공동체주의적 요소가 부각되는 양상을 보이고 있다. 공동체주의와 덕 교육은 우리의 교육에 시사하는 바가 적지 않다. 그러나 한계가 있음도 부인하기 힘들다. 이 글은 공동체주의를 주도하기 시작한 매킨타이어의 도덕 철학을 중심으로 도덕의 위기와 정체성 문제를 다루어 봄으로써 이를 우리의 교육에 어떻게 수용하고 발전시켜야 할 것인가를 모색하기 위한 것이다. 이를 위하여 인간의 자아정체성에 대한 공동체주의의 문제의식을 철학적 인식지평에서 살피는 작업에 천착하였다. 그리하여 근대적 정체성에 대한 공동체주의의 비판과 대안으로서의 서사적 정체성이 갖는 위상과 한계를 드러내 보이고자 하였다. 이는 외국의 교육이론이나 철학을 받아들이고 현장에서 적용하고자 할 때 필히 거쳐야 하는 작업이다. 이를 소홀히 할 경우 우리의 교육에 덕이 되기보다 논의만 무성한 채 혼란을 가중시킬 뿐이기 때문이다. 교육적 효과를 증대시키고 우리의 교육을 살찌우는 길이 되지 않는다면 아무리 훌륭한 이론이고 철학인들 무슨 소용이 있으랴. 결론적으로 오늘의 현실이 도덕의 위기로 읽히기 보다 도덕의 진보로 읽혀야 하고, 우리의 삶과 교육도 인간의 부정적 자기정체성에서 벗어나 긍정적 정체성을 창조적으로 모색할 필요가 있다는 논지를 펼쳐 보이고자 한다.
Abstract
This paper is a critical review on communitarian narrative identity. With the resurgence of communitarianism, they present a severe criticism against the failure of liberal progressive education both for the crisis of morality and the loss of identity. They also offer powerful arguments for the restoration of Aristotelian virtues education as a credible alternative. They continue to argue that the restoration of virtues education and narrative identity are the sole alternatives in order to overcome the above-mentioned problematic issues. There exist some important educational implications embedded in the essentials of communitarianism and virtues education. However, it is also true that some critical limitations can be found in them as well. This paper, by dealing with the issues of moral crisis and identity problems mainly based on MacIntyre's moral philosophy leading communitarianism, seeks out how to accommodate and develop those traditions in Korean education. This paper conclusively argues not only that the realities of life in today's world should be read as 'progress' rather than 'crisis' in terms of morality but also that, far from the negative self-identity, we should creatively delve into possibility of developing the positive selfidentity.
