본 논문의 문제의식은 덕의 내면적 형성과 외부적 발현에 있어서 이성과 정서가 어떤 관련을 갖는가 하는 점이다. 덕의 개념을 중심으로 도덕교육에 관한 사고를 하는 것이 바람직하다는 점, 그리고 실제로 덕이 교육의 중요한 내용이 되는 것은 자연스럽다는 점은 본 논문의 일관된 입장이다. 이성과 정서의 관련에 대한 사유는 이성이 제대로 발현되기 위해서는 정서가 억압되어야 한다고 주장하는 플라톤의 입장을 한 극단으로 하고, 도덕에 있어 정서가 중요하며 이성은 그 정서의 시녀에 지나지 않는다고 주장하는 흄의 관점을 또 한 극단으로 하는 일직선 상에서 다양한 스펙트럼을 가진다. 다마지오와 마멜리는 합리성에 대한 정서의 중요성을 역설한다. 다마지오는 ‘행동선택에 관한 정서적 사전선별이론’과 그에 따른 그의 신체표지가설을, 마멜리는 ‘행동선택에 관한 정서적 선별이론’과 그에 따른 그의 신체표지가설을 내세운다. 다마지오는 이성에 의한 비용-편익분석 이전까지 정서가 기능을 한다고 주장하는 반면, 마멜리는 정서는 이성과 끝까지 공동작용하며, 오히려 행위의 최종선택은 정서에 의해 이루어진다고 주장한다.
Abstract
This article centers on the relation of reason to emotion in the cultivation and practice of virtues. It is consistent with this article that it is desirable to think about the moral education focusing on virtue, and that it is good to take the virtues to be primary. Thoughts on the relation between reason and emotion are arranged with the various spectrum from Plato's view on the one hand to Hume's views on the other hand. Damasio and Mameli agree that emotions are important for rationality. Damasio propose 'emotional preselection theory of action choice' and his somatic-marker hypothsis. But Mameli propose 'emotional selection theory of action choice' and his new somatic-marker hypothsis. Damasio argues that emotions function just before unemotional cost-benefit analysis, Mameli argues that the choice between different actions is always determined by the emotional feelings not by emotional cost-benefit analysis.
