Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to investigate Plato' Myth of Er in the Republic, and to clarify its implication for moral education. First, as a preliminary consideration, this paper attempts to inquire about the meaning of myth in Plato's mind. Plato used myth as a means of presenting the invisible world that cannot be approached through logical explanation. Next, we explore the main content of the Myth of Er, that death would be a separation of body and soul, and the immortality of the soul. In the Republic, Plato claims that the human soul is complex but is comprised of three parts. And in the Myth of Er, he conceptualized the soul as a person, and draws the conclusion that the nature of the soul is complex and immortal. Based on this knowledge, we can explain the implied meanings of the Myth of Er in moral education. In particular, the Myth of Er provides us with a moral lesson by which to live our lives.
