본 연구는 헤르바르트의 취미 개념을 고찰하여 취미와 도덕성의 관련성을 드러내는 데에 목적이 있다. 헤르바르트는 칸트의 도덕성 개념을 ‘내용’ 없는 ‘형식’이라는 점에서 비판하고, 그것에 대한 대안적 관점을 제시한다. 헤르바르트가 칸트를 비판하는 구체적인 이유는 칸트가 적극적으로 해명해야 할 지점을 회피하고 있다는 것, 말하자면 도덕성은 선험적 자유와 같이 우리의 의식과 무관한 어떤 원인에 의하여 결정되는 것이 아니라, 교육의 실천을 통해 의미가 드러나고 확립된다는 것이었다. 헤르바르트가 보기에, 교육의 실천을 통해 드러나고 확립되는 것은 도덕성의 표준인 사고권이며, ‘취미’ 개념은 이 사고권과 마음의 분리되지 않은 상태를 설명하기 위해서 도입된 개념이다. 위대한 것이 인간과 분리되지 않은 상태이며, 그 위대한 것은 교육의 실천을 통해 확립해 나갈 수 있다는 것, 이것이야말로 헤르바르트가 도덕교육에 주는 큰 의의이다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to identify the relationship between taste and morality through investigating Johann Friedrich Herbart’s concept of taste. Herbart criticized Kant’s concept of morality as being ‘formed’ without ‘contents’, and provided an alternative viewpoint from Kant. More specifically, Herbart criticized Kant for evading a critical point that needs explanation, which is the fact that morality is not determined by any factor separate from people’s consciousness such as transcendental freedom, but is revealed and established through education. Herbart believed that it is the circle of thought, the standard of morality, that is revealed and established through education, and the concept of ‘taste’ was introduced to explain the undivided state of such circle of thought and the mind. The fact that greatness is not separate from people and that this greatness can be established through education is the major significance that Herbart contributes to moral education.
