Abstract
The main purpose of this paper is to point out the strengths and limitations of the motivational theory of moral self-identity centered on A. Blasi in understanding the process by which moral judgment drives moral behavior and explore its alternatives that can explain the source of the individual's moral behavior more broadly beyond the restrictive level of moral self-identity. As an expansive model of moral self-identity, the self-system is presented as a holistic mechanism that considers that both self and morality stem from the same fundamental structure of consciousness, and its concept, formation process, and functions are discussed. The self-system has a holistic character that encompasses one's own perspective on oneself, one's relationships, culture, and society. In addition, the self-system provides a framework to understand and explain the relationship between an individual's moral judgments and actions in a multidimensional manner other than the moral self identity.
