Abstract

It has been focused on the role of moral cognition or moral emotion about what motivates moral actions in moral psychology. But It has been revealed that these approaches have some merits for us to understand what is the motivation of human's moral action, but they are not enough to explain it completely. Recently, however, some scholars such as A. Blasi, D. Lapsley, L. Nucci have suggested that moral motivation is more fully understood by considering the role of the self in morality, often termed moral self or moral identity. They empathized that moral identity may play an important role in motivating moral action. For example, according to Blasi, in moral identity, moral concerns like moral principles, goals and commitments are integrated with one's motivational and emotional systems. Furthermore, when morality is important and central to one's sense of self and identity, it heightens one's sens of obligation and responsibility to live consistent with one's moral concerns. In this paper, I explored that what is the role of moral self and moral identity for the moral action, and how to endeavor to build the moral self in moral education based on the point of Blsi's and Nucci's view.
