본 연구는 대학생의 미디어를 통한 다문화 간접 접촉경험이 다문화수용성에 미치는 영향을 알아보고 이들 간의 관계에서 사회적 관심의 조절효과를 알아보고자 하였다. 본 연구는 서울 소재 4년제 3개 대학의 학생들을 대상으로 다문화 간접 접촉경험(외국출신자에 대해 부정적, 긍정적으로 묘사한 미디어 접촉경험) 조사문항, 다문화수용성 척도(KMCI) 개정판, 사회적 관심 척도를 설문으로 조사하여 530명의 자료를 분석하였다. 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 미디어를 통한 다문화 간접 접촉경험은 대학생의 다문화수용성에 유의한 영향을 미쳤다. 둘째, 미디어를 통한 다문화 간접 접촉경험과 다문화수용성 사이에서 사회적 관심의 조절효과가 나타났다. 본 연구결과를 통해 미디어를 통한 다문화 간접 접촉경험이 사회구성원의 다문화수용성에 영향을 준다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 또한 사회적 관심의 향상이 사회구성원의 다문화수용성에 긍정적인 영향을 준다는 것을 보여주었다. 심리치료 프로그램이나 교육을 통해 사회적 관심을 개선할 수 있다는 선행연구 결과를 감안하면 본 연구를 통해 사회구성원의 다문화수용성 향상을 통한 다문화 사회 정착에 미디어를 활용한 심리치료 프로그램의 개발 필요성을 알 수 있었다.
Abstract
The aim of this study is to re-validate findings on the influence of multicultural indirect contact experience on multicultural acceptability as determined in previous studies. For the purpose of this study, the moderating effects of social interest in multicultural contact experience and multicultural acceptability were examined. A survey of 605 students from three universities in Seoul was conducted and data on 530 of the participants was analyzed. This study used a multicultural indirect contact experiences Inventory (negative and positive media experiences of foreigners), a social interests inventory, and a revised Korean multiculturalism inventory (KMCI). The result of this study showed that frequency of exposure to media depicting foreign-born persons had a significant influence on multicultural acceptability. Furthermore, participants’ social interest provided a moderating effect between multicultural indirect contact experiences and multicultural acceptability. The study suggests that it is necessary to improve the multicultural acceptability of members of mainstream society for a stable multicultural society. It also indicates that social interest is an important factor affecting a multicultural society fixation. Therefore, multicultural education utilizing media and increased social interest through personal counseling or group counseling could be helpful in developing multicultural acceptability. This study recommends a reconsideration of the role of psychological therapy in the improvement of multicultural acceptability.
