Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine the possibility of therapeutic reading of the poems of Kim Sain which can be shared by the poet and the reader. Kim’s poems well represent the experience of the poet who has long endured the sufferings of the period since the 1980s. Poetry is characterized by rhythmically expressing metaphors, figures of speech, and symbolic elements to reveal the true feelings of the poet. These elements provide the readers with a space to appreciate poetry in connection with their own feelings and situations. The aesthetics of empathy felt by readers when they exercise their imagination while appreciating poetry is the therapeutic possibility of poetry. The act of writing and reading a poem involves a process of healing that fosters the power of insight with which readers can reflect upon themselves. We can understand someone’s mind because we have empathy for others. Therefore, if we find a situation similar to our own while reading a poem, we do naturally feel emotions of compassion and comfort. Having experienced others' lives while reading a poem, readers gain the possibility of confronting their own problems. When they understand that they are not the only ones who suffer in this world, readers may experience psychological healing through poetry. Thus, this article examines the possibility of healing through the works of Kim Sain who has continuously expressed the pains of our society since the 1980s.
