독서치료는 근본적으로 문학작품이든 비문학작품이든 책을 통해서 정신건강을 증진시키고 개인의 문제를 해결하며 사회적 관심이 무엇인지 알게 한다. 독서치료에서 취급되는 다양한 자료의 효과적 활용을 위해서는 그 자료가 가급적 보편적 주제여야 한다는 것이다. 보편적 주제일수록 독자가 쉽게 인식할 수 있고 또 자신과 쉽게 동일시할 수 있는 정서와 경험을 함께 할 수 있기 때문이다. 귄터 그라스의『양철북』은 주제의 측면에서 파악해 보면, 보편적이고, 영향력이 있으며, 이해될 만하며, 긍정적 주제이다. 본고의 연구목표는 문학작품을 통한 사회 치료적 관점을 중심으로 독서치료의 외연 확장을 시도한다. 독서치료적 관점에서 보면, 귄터 그라스의『양철북』은 이런 점에서 지금도 논란의 대상이 되고 있는 일본의 역사 반성과 뚜렷한 대조를 이룬다. 주인공 오스카는 자신의 조그만 양철북을 두드려 세상과 사회에 경종을 울릴 뿐만 아니라 날카로운 괴성으로 허울의 문명을 상징하는 유리와 창에 금이 가게 만들고 깨뜨려 부순다. 독일 나치즘의 생성 토양이었던 소시민 계급을 비판하며 나아가 과거역사에 대한 반성과 아울러 과거극복을 성취해내려고 하는 것이다. 이것은 개인치료적 관점에서 집단치료 내지 사회치료적 관점으로 이동하는 대목이기도 하다.
Abstract
Bibliotherapy fundamentally tries to enhance mental health through literary and non-literary works, attempts to solve personal problems and inform participants about social concerns. For the materials used in bibliotherapy to be effective, themes and subjects should be as universal as possible. The more universal the subject, the easier it is for the reader to recognize it. The reader can then share emotions and experiences with which one can easily identify with. Günter Grass's “The Tin-Drum” is one of those that are universal, influential, understandable, and positive in terms of subject matter. The aim of this study is to expand the scope of bibliotherapy to be social therapy through literary works. From a bibliotherapy-based approach, Günter Grass's “The Tin-Drum” is in sharp contrast with Japan’s lack of historical self-reflection which is still a subject of controversy in contemporary society. The protagonist, Oscar, not only wakes the world and society by tapping his tiny tin-drum, but also cracks and breaks the glass and windows symbolizing a civilization of semblance with a sharp shriek. It is also critical of the petit bourgeois class that formed the basis of German Nazism, and it seeks to overcome the past through self-reflection on history. The approach taken in this study is part of a shift from a personal treatment perspective to a group therapy or social therapy perspective.
