본 연구는 손원평의 장편소설 아몬드에 나타난 주인공 윤재를 서사의 주체로 두고 작품서사를 분석하여 공감 교육의 새로운 가능성을 모색하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 기존 공감 교육은 주로 정서적 공감에 치중함으로써 감정 소진이나 형식적 동일시의 한계를 드러내 왔다. 이에 본 연구는 알렉시티미아(감정 표현 불능증)라는 윤재의 특수한 상황을 오히려 공감 학습의 필연적인 구조로 해석하고, 인지적 공감과 행동 공감의 중요성을 강조하고자 한다. 소설 아몬드의 주인공 윤재는 선천적 결핍으로 감정을 인식하고 표현하는 데 어려움을 겪지만, 곤이와의 관계 및 다양한 서사 경험을 통해 정서적 공감의 부재 단계에서, 모방과 상상을 통한 인지적 공감 단계, 그리고 타인의 어려움에 참여하는 행동 공감 단계로 나아간다. 이러한 변화는 공감이 선천적 기질이 아니라 학습과 훈련을 통해 발달 가능한 능력임을 보여준다. 나아가, 본 연구는 윤재를 중심으로 한 작품서사 분석을 토대로 공감결핍양상을 보이는 유사 사례에 보편적으로 적용 가능한 행동 공감 교육의 분석 틀을 제시하여, 기존의 정서 중심 공감 논의와의 차별성을 확보하고자 한다. 문학이 독자가 타인의 관점을 상상하고 이해하며, 실천적 참여로 확장하도록 이끄는 ‘공감의 기술’로 기능할 수 있음을 시사한다. 본 연구는 이를 바탕으로 서사기반 공감 교육의 구체적 방향을 제시하며, 청소년 공감 능력 함양과 친사회적 행동 증진을 위한 문학교육의 실천적 의의를 밝힌다
Abstract
This study explores new possibilities in empathy education by analyzing the narrative of Yunjae, the protagonist of Sohn Won-pyung’s novel Almond. Previous approaches to empathy education have primarily focused on affective empathy, which often leads to emotional exhaustion or superficial identification. In contrast, this study emphasizes the significance of cognitive and behavioral empathy. Yunjae, who suffers from alexithymia due to congenital deficits, struggles to perceive and express emotions. However, through his relationship with Gon-i and various narrative experiences, he progresses from the absence of affective empathy to the practice of cognitive empathy through imitation and imagination, and finally to behavioral empathy, which involves active participation in others’ difficulties. This transformation demonstrates that empathy is not merely an innate disposition but a capacity that can be cultivated through learning and training. Literature functions as a “technology of empathy” that enables readers to imagine and understand others’ perspectives and extend this understanding into practical engagement. Based on this analysis, the present study proposes directions for narrative-based empathy education and highlights the practical implications of literature education in enhancing adolescents’ empathy and prosocial behavior
