퍼스의 귀추와 가설의 방법

가설의 방법은 이제 과학 탐구에서 필수적인 방법론적 틀로 자리잡았다. 가설의 방법을 명시적인 형태로 처음 제시한 사람은 퍼스(Charles Sanders Peirce)이다. 귀추(歸推, abduction)는 이 가설의 방법의 일부로서 제시되었다. 퍼스에 따르면, 가설의 발견에 반드시 귀추가 필요하며, 이는 연역과 귀납과 구별되는 독자성을 갖는다. 그러나 퍼스는 이에 상반되는 주장도 함께 하고 있다. 그는 가설의 발견이 추리와는 무관한 상상력에 의해서 이루어진다고 하기도 하며, 귀추를 귀납의 일부라고 하면서 그 독자성을 부정하는 듯한 주장도 함께 하고 있다. 하지만, 논자는 퍼스의 주장을 역설로 볼 필요가 없다고 생각한다. 이를 보이기 위해 먼저 귀추적 올바름과 귀추 도식을 구분하였고, 이를 토대로 귀추가 도식의 관점에서 독자적이라고 주장하였다. 또한 귀추와 귀추의 요소를 구분하였다. 귀추의 부분을 이루는 가설의 발생은 섬광처럼 추론과 구별되는 방식으로 이루어질 수 있다. 그에 비해 귀추 자체는 추리적 논증 도식이어서 추론의 산물이라 하겠다. 그리고 귀추를 IBE로 보려는 해석은 거부했지만, 귀추가 IBE에 내장되어 있다고 주장함으로써, 퍼스의 역설적 주장을 정합하게 이해하려고 하였다. 더불어 가설의 방법에 규범층(normative layer)과 서술층(descriptive layer)이 따로 존재한다고 보게 되면, 퍼스의 가설의 방법 속에서 귀추의 위치가 보다 명확히 드러난다.
Abstract
Charles Sanders Peirce is the first figure who formulated the method of hypothesis. Abduction is one part of the method. According to him, it is a method of discovery and a mode of reasoning at the same time, also has an autonomy and doesn't have an autonomy. But if some distinctions would be drawn, those paradoxical situation could be resolved. We need the abductive correctness of reasoning vs. the abductive scheme of reasoning, the abductive scheme vs. it's component parts. Futhermore, the discovery-justification distinction has to be refined by introducing descriptive and normative layer.
