많은 학자들과 일반인들은 제러미 벤담을 공리주의의 창시자로 인식하지만, 17-19세기 사이의 영국 주요 사상가들 가운데 공리주의 혹은 공리주의적 전통의 창시자 혹은 전조로 일컬어진 인물은 한둘이 아니다. 그 목록에는 컴벌랜드, 샤프츠베리, 허치슨, 흄 등이 자주 언급된다. 그런데 이들을 어떤 의미에서든 ‘공리주의자’라고 부를 수 있을지에 대해서는 상이한 해석들이 있었고, 이러한 해석상의 충돌은 부분적으로 ‘공리주의적’이라는 수식어의 의미나 적용기준을 명확히 규정하지 못한 것에 기인한다. 이 논문에서 필자는 공리주의에 대한 헨리 시즈위크의 ‘보편주의적 쾌락주의’라는 정의에 기초하여 이 사상가들의 중심 생각을 간략히 해설할 것이다. 이 해설은 그들의 중심 생각과 ‘보편주의적 쾌락주의’라는 정의 사이의 간극을 관찰하는 작업이다. 필자는 이러한 관찰에 기초하여 벤담의 학설이 전통과의 차별 내지 단절의 양상, 요컨대 독창성을 드러내는 지점들을 조명할 것이다. 이 논문에서 살펴볼 차별 내지 단절의 양상은 (1) 인간 본성에 대한 자연주의적 관점, (2) 인간의 좋음에 대한 완전한 쾌락주의적 해석, (3) 도덕 판단의 유일한 대상을 행동으로 규정한 것이다. 필자는 이러한 양상들의 조명을 통하여 벤담은 공리주의의 근본 성격을 공적 윤리로 전환한, 즉 새로운 공리주의 전통의 창시자임을 역설하고자 한다.
Abstract
Many scholars and the public have pointed to Jeremy Bentham as the founder of modern utilitarianism. Among the major English thinkers between the 17th and 19th centuries, however, there are more than one who have been called as the founder or precursor of utilitarianism or the utilitarian tradition. The most frequently mentioned in the list of those thinkers are Richard Cumberland, Shaftesbury, Francis Hutcheson, and David Hume. There have been conflicting views about whether they can properly be called ‘utilitarian’ in any sense. This is at least partly due to the difficulty of defining more or less clearly the meaning or applicable criterion of the term ‘utilitarian.’ In this paper I shall first briefly expound the central ideas of the above thinkers on the basis of Henry Sidgwick’s definition of utilitarianism as ‘universalistic hedonism.’ This exposition is focused on the observation of the gap between their ideas and the universalistic hedonism as defined by Sidgwick. Based on this observation, again I shall attempt to illuminate the points where Bentham’s doctrine exhibits the aspects of discontinuity from the tradition, that is, its originality. Those aspects to be considered here are (1) his naturalistic view on human nature, (2) completely hedonistic interpretation of human good, and (3) stipulation of action as the only object of moral judgment. Through this illumination, I shall assert that Bentham changed the fundamental character of utilitarianism into public ethics and became the founder of a novel utililitarian tradition.
