“자연은 인류를 고통과 쾌락이라는 최고의 두 주인들이 지배하도록 하였다”. 『도덕과 입법의 원칙에 관한 서론』 도입부에서 등장하는 이 문장은 벤담 저작에서 가장 잘 알려진 문장 중 하나로, 벤담의 도덕이론에 관한 논의에서 늘 인용되어 왔다. 이에 근거, 대부분의 주석가들은 벤담의 도덕이론이 윤리적 자연주의에 기초한다고 믿어 의심치 않는다. 하지만 인용문 후미에서 벤담은 “은유와 연설은 이 정도로 하자. 도덕 과학은 이러한 수단으로 향상되지 않는다”라고 적고 있다. 저명한 벤담 연구가 중 한 명인 D. 바움가르트는 이 점을 지적하면서 문제의 문장은 어디까지나 문학적 효과를 노린 것이지 벤담의 입장에 관한 결정적 진술은 아니라고 말했다. 벤담의 자연주의는 여전히 지지될 수 있을까? 본 논문에서 필자는 발전사적 관점에서 이 문제를 검토해 볼 것이다. 『도덕과 입법의 원칙에 관한 서론』과 그보다 30년 후에 집필된 『행동 동인 목록』의 내용을 비교, 검토하면서 초기 자연주의적 입장이 어떻게, 그리고 어떤 이유로 퇴락하였는지를 살펴 볼 것이다. 벤담의 궁극적 목표가 ‘입법가를 위한 동기들의 목록’을 작성하는 일이었다는 점에서, 본 연구는 그의 실천철학적 고민을 우회적으로 조명해 보는 계기가 될 것이다.
Abstract
“Nature has placed mankind under the governance of two sovereigns, pain and pleasure.” This ‘two sovereigns’ passage at the beginning of An Introduction to the Principles of Morals and Legislation is one of the best known in Bentham's works, and it has become the focus of the discussion of his moral theory. As a result, most commentators accept that Bentham's moral theory was based on the ethical naturalism. However, Bentham wrote at the end of the same passage: "But enough of metaphor and declamation: it is not by such means that moral science is to be improved." By drawing attention to this statement another important Bentham scholar, David Baumgardt said that the ‘two sovereigns’ passage is not a definitive statement of Bentham's position but was written for literary effect. Can we still defend Bentham's naturalism? In this paper, I will examine how Bentham's position was changed from Introduction to A Table of the Springs of Action written 30 years later than the former text, and what were his reasons for this change. This study will be suitably included in a discussion of Bentham's practical reason, by the fact that his purpose in both texts consisted in offering a list of motives for legislators.
