스트로슨은 기술적 형이상학을 제시하여 형이상학을 복권시켰다는 평가를 받았다. 그런데, 그가 자신의 형이상학을 “기술적”이라고 말하면서 기존의 “수정적” 형이상학과 차별화를 시도했으나, 이런 노력이 성공적이었는지는 의문이다. 이를 위해서 형이상학의 종류, 무어-라제로비츠 식의 기술적 형이상학이 차례로 논의될 것이다. 이어서 그의 형이상학이 기술이 아니라 특별한 논증 즉 선험적 논증이라는 것이 지적될 것이다. 기술이 아니라 논증에 종사하는 점에서, 기술적 형이상학은 스트로슨이 거부하고자 했던 수정적 형이상학 등 다른 종류의 형이상학과 다를 바 없게 된다. 또한 스트로슨이 자신의 형이상학이 연결적 분석의 특수한 경우라고 명시적으로 주장한다는 것을 지적하겠다. 이런 점을 모두 감안한다면, 그의 형이상학이 그만의 독특한 의미로는 기술적일 수 있으나, 일상적인 의미로 기술적이라고 하기는 어려울 것이다.
Abstract
P. F. Strawson has been known as one of distinguishing philosophers who had actively presented his metaphysics under a vigorous anti- metaphysical era in the analytic tradition. Many commentators regarded his effort as the rehabilitation of metaphysics. Despite of it’s high reputation, some doubts on his descriptive metaphysics have been emerged. Is it really descriptive? I will answer ‘no’ to this for the reason which Strawson had not put forward a kind of description but a kind of transcendental argument in his overall metaphysical work. Furthermore, he had insisted that his descriptive metaphysics is just different in generality from the conceptual analysis which is allegedly connective, and there are no reasons to refute his assertion. If his metaphysics is descriptive, the adjective “descriptive” means something peculiar one far away from its ordinary or standard meaning.
