콰인과 스트로슨은 이십세기 영미철학에서 형이상학의 복원에 크게 기여한 철학자들이다. 또한 이 두 철학자는 존재론적 개입 기준이나 동일성 기준에 대해 관심을 갖고 논의한 점에서 비슷한 존재론적 기획을 갖고 있었다. 하지만 이들은 존재론적 개입 기준에 관한 의견차를 보이는데서 그치지 않고, 동일성 기준에서도 서로 의견이 달랐다. 콰인은 어떤 것의 존재를 수용하려면 동일성 기준을 통과해야 한다고 주장했다. 그의 유명한 슬로건 중 하나가 이를 잘 표현하고 있다. “동일성 없이는 아무것도 없다”(No entity without identity). 스트로슨은 이 기준이 의미하고자 하는 바가 겉보기처럼 명료한 것은 아니며, 예를 들어, 적어도 세 가지 방식의 해석이 가능하다고 말한다. 그리고 그는 가능한 각 해석의 적절성 여부에 대해서도 검토한다. 이 세 가지를 모두 거부한 뒤에 스트로슨은 콰인이 제시했다고 보기 어려운 자신의 해석을 제시한다. 여기서는 콰인의 동일성 기준에 대한 스트로슨의 논의를 검토하고, 이어서 왜 만족스러운 해석이 아닌지 평가하고자 한다.
Abstract
Quine and Strawson have done a great job in rehabilitating metaphysics within analytic tradition. But they had some different perspectives on the criterion of ontological commitment and of identity. In this paper, we will concentrate on an encounter of these giants with respect to the latter criterion. Strawson pointed out ambiguity of Quine's famous dictum, i.e. "No entity without identity", and criticised each of three interpretations. But Strawson's reading and criticism miss the target. For there is no ambiguity in Quine's criterion. Furthermore, Strawson's interpretation and position is based on epistemological construal rather than metaphysical one.
