자연 환경 파괴는 우리 인간의 생존과 불가분의 관계를 맺고 있다. 따라서 자연 환경에 대한 인식 변화의 중요성에 대해서는 새삼 거론할 필요조차 없다. 환경윤리란 인간과 자연 환경과의 윤리적 관계에 대한 체계적 설명이다. 이런 차원에서, 우리는 인간 이외의 자연적 대상 역시 윤리적 논의의 세계에 포함시켜야 한다. 특히, 우리는 우리 자신이 속해 있는 서식 환경에 폭넓은 관심을 기울여야 한다. 서식 환경에 대한 윤리적 고려의 중요성을 환경윤리의 기초 과제로 표방한 사람은 알도 레오폴드이다. 그는 땅에 대한 새로운 시각 변화의 필요성에 대해 언급한다. 땅을 단순한 소유 재산이 아닌 생태학적 대상으로 간주해야 한다는 것이다. 이를 통해, 레오폴드는 ‘대지윤리’라는 생태중심의 윤리를 건설하고자 했다. 본고는 ‘대지윤리’라는 레오폴드의 환경윤리 사상을 체계적으로 검토하고자 한다. 그리고 대지윤리가 상당 부분 생태학적 이해에 기초하고 있음을 밝히면서, 생태학적 관점에서 대지윤리가 기존 환경윤리 사상의 난점을 어떻게 극복하고자 했는지도 검토하고자 한다.
Abstract
Aldo Leopold's A Sand County Almanac called for a revolution in environmental ethics, a revolution in the way we behave toward ‘land'. He noted that one behave unethically regarding land. But Leopold's ethics, land-community ethics, so called ‘land ethic' investigate the claim that land is a member of the moral community of humans. Land ethic was an understanding of land as something far more complex than a set of resources, or even a collection of individual plants and animals. Rather it was a set of ecological interactions and relationships, interactions and relationships that could be disrupted only at great risk to the health and integrity of the land. This Paper aims to show that the core of Leopold's land ethic was his linkage of ethics to ecology.
