현대 건축에 나타난 공간 개념의 철학적 고찰

근대의 공간론은 공간에 포함된 사물의 질적 특성과 상관없는 하나의 절대적 공간을 전제한다. 그런데 이러한 근대의 공간론은 르네상스 회화에서 알 수 있듯이 다른 감각을 배제하는 시각중심주의와 공간의 동질화라는 한계를 지닌다. 이는 모더니즘 건축에서도 그대로 나타나는데, 20세기 초반에 나타난 국제주의 양식은 모더니즘 건축에 전제된 공간론의 문제점을 명확하게 표출한다. 이 글은 이러한 모더니즘 건축의 한계를 공간론에 초점을 맞추어 그것을 극복하고자 하는 현대건축의 몇몇 시도들을 검토하고자 한다. 여기서 공간을 시각적 대상이 아닌 세계와 몸이 관계 맺는 방식으로 보는 메를로퐁티의 공간론과 건축을 추상적인 공간의 생산이 아닌 장소의 구현으로 보는 하이데거의 건축론이 검토된다. 모더니즘 건축과 현대건축은 그것에 전제된 공간론에서 명확하게 구별될 수 있으며, 현대건축은 모더니즘 건축의 공간적 한계를 극복하는 시도로서 설명될 수 있다. 유하니 팔라스마와 스티븐 홀의 건축은 메를로퐁티의 공간론에 바탕을 두고 지각의 활성화를 통해서 모더니즘 건축의 시각중심주의적 한계를 극복하고자 하는 시도로 읽을 수 있다. 한편 벤투리의 포스트모던 건축이나 현대의 랜드스케이프 건축은 맥락 혹은 환경에 따라 특수한 장소성을 구축함으로서 모더니즘 건축의 획일적인 공간적 특성을 극복하려는 시도로 읽을 수 있다.
Abstract
Modern concept of space presupposes an absolute space completely independent of things contained in the space. As we can see in the paintings of Renaissance era, it exposes the problems that all other senses but visual sense are excluded and all spaces become homogeneous. These problems are also found in the modern architecture, especially in so-called 'international style' architecture characterizing early 20th century architecture. This paper examines some architectural efforts of contemporary architecture to solve these problems by focusing on the concepts of space presupposes in the modern architecture and contemporary architecture. We also examine briefly Merleau-Ponty's theory of space and Heidegger's theory of architecture. We can distinguish clearly the characteristics of modern architecture and contemporary architecture by taking notice of the concepts of space they take separately. We can consider Pallasmaa and Holl's architecture as efforts to overcome the problem of ocularcentrism in the modern architecture on the basis of Merleau-Ponty's theory of space. In this context we can consider Venturi's post-modern architecture and contemporary 'Landscape' architecture as efforts to overcome the problem of homogenization in the modern architecture by substituting 'place' for space.
