칸트는 선험적 지식을 자연에 대한 확실한 인식을 제공하는 근거로 보고 선험적 지식의 역할을 확장시킨다. 모든 지식이 경험으로부터 출발하며, 선험적 지식이란 자연의 사실에 대해 어떤 정보도 제공해주지 않는다는 경험론의 입장은 칸트의 설명을 수용할 수 없었다. 경험론적 전통을 이어받은 논리실증주의는 이 문제를 분명히 해결해야 했다. 그래서 에이어(A. J. Ayer)는 경험론의 전통에 근거해서 보다 구체적으로 선험적 지식의 성격과 역할을 명시한다. 에이어는 칸트가 명시한 분석판단과 종합판단의 구분을 비판하여 이를 보완하고, 이것을 근거로 선험적 지식에 대한 경험론의 입장을 구체적으로 대변한다. 그는 선험적 지식의 존재를 인정하는 동시에 그것의 범위와 역할을 제한함으로써 인식의 확실성과 확장성을 동시에 보증하는 칸트의 선험적 종합판단의 존재를 부정한다. 그럼으로써 그는 선험적 종합판단이라는 경험론의 난제를 해결하고 경험론의 위상을 유지할 수 있다고 여겼다. 그러나 햄린과 브랜샤드 그리고 경험론의 전통에 있는 러셀의 비판은 그의 선험적 지식에 대한 해석이 지나치다는 것을 보여준다. 또한 극단적 경험론이라고 불리는 실용주의조차도 선험적 지식에, 비록 필연적이지 않지만, 사실에 대한 인식을 인도하는 역할을 부여한다. 게다가 크립키(S. Kripke)는 필연적인 경험적 명제와 우연적인 선험적 명제의 예를 제시한다. 필연적인 경험적 명제의 가능성은 선험적인 지식이 분석적이고 필연적인 지식이라는 에이어의 해석에 문제가 있음을 보여주고, 우연적인 선험적 명제의 가능성은 선험적 지식이 사실에 대한 정보를 제공할 수 있다는 것을 보여준다. 무엇보다 우리의 인식 구조와 방식이 칸트가 주장하는 것처럼 주관 중심으로 이루어진다면 선험적 지식은 확실성 뿐 아니라 사실에 대한 정보도 제공해 줄 수 있는 여지를 가진다.
Abstract
Kant extends the role of a priori knowledge in our knowing by regarding it as basis giving certain believes about the nature. Empiricists can't accept Kant' explanation because they contend that all knowledge begin in experience and a priori knowledge says nothing concerning any matter of fact. Logical Empiricists must solve this problem. So A. J. Ayer specifies the nature and the role of it in the view of empiricism. He explains a priori knowledges as follows. 1) They are necessarily true because they are analytic. 2) They report linguistic usages. 3) They are conventions and 4) They assert nothing about fact. Therefore, he admits the being of a priori knowledges but by confining the scope and role of them, he doesn't admit Kant' synthetic a priori knowledges But critics of D. W. Hamlyn, B. Blanshard and empiricist B. Russell on Ayer's arguments show them not be valid. And Pragmatism, called be radical empiricism, asserts that a priori knowledge, even though it is not necessary, plays a role leading knowledge of facts. Also S. Kripke shows cases on a necessary empirical judgment and a contingent a priori judgment. A possibility of necessary empirical judgments shows that Ayer's argument which a priori knowledge is analytic and necessary is not valid. And A possibility of a contingent a priori judgment shows that a priori knowledge can say matter of facts. First of all, like Kant's system, if the object is constructed by a priori form of subject, we may judge it synthetically, yet a priori. Consequently, a priori knowledge may give not only the certain belief but also information of the nature.
