Abstract
The aim of this study is to examine D. W. Hamlyn's arguments of the origins of understanding based on the concept of a priori knowledge. In my view, Hamlyn's arguments have two kinds of problems; the one is that his view of the acquisition of knowledge is not different from empiricism, the another is that his view of the public character of knowledge is not valid. According to this study, these problems involved in his arguments may be stemmed from the following; he limits the meaning of knowledge to 'concepts' on the level of phenomenon, and excludes 'transcendental ideas' on the level of noumenon with regard to the meaning of knowledge. As regards these problems, it seems that I. Kant's epistemological view, in which 'concepts' and 'ideas' are two different and correlated constituents of knowledge, and our cognition can be explained by interaction between two constituents, shows the metaphysical aspects of knowledge acquisition. Furthermore, Kant's view that 'ideas' are supposed to be origins of our knowledge, understanding, that is our all thoughts, words, behaviour implies the fact that knowledge is not private but public; it is by definition 'the social'. I thinks that if, and only, Hamlyn's conception of 'the social' is supposed to be the empirical counterpart of 'ideas' and 'ideas' are supposed to be the metaphysical counterparts of 'the social', his view of the origins of understanding can be valid. In short, we can say that 'transcendental ideas' represent the metaphysical aspects of our knowledge and mind, and the acquisition of knowledge is based on these ideas, our mind's spontaneous activities.
