이 글에서 우리는 실러에게서 여러 의미의 자유 개념들이 발견될 뿐만 아니라 그것들이 주로 미와 관련되어 이해되고 있음에 주목하고, 미적 현상이 내포하는 다양한 자유의 의미들을 살펴볼 것이다. 미가 내포하는 여러 의미의 자유들은 실러가 미적 교육론을 주창하게 한 근거가 된다. 한편으로 실러는 미적 교육이 인간의 형식충동을 계발하고 이성적 능력을 함양할 수 있다는 데에 주목했고, 또 다른 한편으로 형식충동과 감각충동을 함께 활성화하여 인간의 전인성을 회복하는 계기가 될 수 있다고도 보았는데, 이 두 가지 견해가 모두 가능한 것은 미적 대상이 자율성Autonomie과 자기자율성Heautonomie을 함께 구현하기 때문이다. 우리는 실러에게서 자율성과 자기자율성이 어떻게 이해되고 있으며 그것들이 어떤 함의를 갖는지를 살펴볼 것이다. 그 과정에서 특히 우리는 실러가 인간의 조화와 통일, 혹은 총체성을 두 가지 다른 방식으로 이해했다는 데에 주목한다. 그것은 한편으로는 ‘의무에의 경향성’을 가짐으로써 도덕과 자연이 분리되지 않아야 한다는 생각을, 다른 한편으로는 인간성의 두 측면이 모두 그 자체로 가치 있으며 따라서 전면적으로 계발될 필요가 있다는 생각을 의미했다. 이 두 가지 생각은 실러가 칸트 철학을 받아들이기 이전부터 가지고 있었던 이상들에 상응하는데, 칸트의 용어들은 실러로 하여금 자신의 이상들을 개념적으로 보다 정확하게 규정할 수 있도록 해주었다. 그는 ‘의무에의 경향성’이 구현하는 ‘도덕적 아름다움’을 이성필연성과 자연필연성의 일치로서의 자유로 이해했고, 미적 정조가 제공하는 두 대립하는 필연성들 사이의 자유를 통해 인간성의 두 측면이 상승의 유희작용을 함으로써 전면적으로 고양된다고 보았다. 그런데 인간의 조화에 대한 두 가지 다른 이해 방식은 이성과 자연의 관계에 대해 대립적인 두 가지 태도를 내포한다. 우리는 실러의 글들을 관통하는 근본적인 모순이 바로 이것과 관계된다고 여긴다.
Abstract
We attend to various meanings of freedom or various concepts of freedom in Schiller’s writings because they could give us clues to the exact relation of Schiller’s and Kant’s thoughts. Actually Schiller uses concepts of freedom with meanings which are not found in Kant’s works. While Kant talked about the moral freedom of humans, Schiller talked also about the freedom of the aesthetic objects, more exactly their “autonomy” and “heautonomy,” understood respectively as the presence of the “form” and the adequacy of the form and the object’s internal essence. In this way, Schiller’s various concepts of freedom are mainly related to the beautiful and the aesthetical, and his attempt to differentiate his and Kant’s thoughts is executed mainly in the area of aesthetics, as an attempt to establish objective criteria of beauty, in defiance of Kant’s subjectification of beauty. In this work we focus on those concepts of freedom related to the beauty, especially those related to the beauty of humanity. From this we would see that Schiller tried to formulate in Kantian terms those very ideals which he had cherished even before he accepted Kant’s moral philosophy, that is, the ideals of “moral beauty” and the total development of human capacities. With these two ideals in mind, Schiller understood the harmony and unity of humanity in two different ways and accordingly formulated two different concepts of freedom.
