Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of instructional models based on vocational training for the deaf on cognitive load. For the purpose, a qualitative study was conducted with hearing impaired subjects who use sign language, which was divided into the two group. The instructional model was developed considering the information processing ability of the deaf people. The qualitative study showed that the cognitive load was reduced in the selective coding of the group, whom the job training instructional model was applied. On the other hand, the cognitive load was relatively high in the selective coding of the group, whom the general instructional was applied. From these results, it was concluded that for the deaf people who participated in visual-focused learning due to their hearing disability, the instructional model that considers the characteristics of the learners reduce the cognitive load compared to the general instructional model. Therefore, it was inferred that the developed model is effective for improving academic achievement and knowledge acquisition, which are directly related to cognitive load. This implies that when conducting job training for the deaf people, it is necessary to apply a instructional model that takes the characteristics of the deaf people into account, rather than using the general instructional model that is used for learners without hearing disability.
