Abstract
The purpose of this study is to identify differences in academic achievement, cognitive load, and performance efficiency, which is a comprehensive indicator of academic achievement and cognitive load, according to mathematics anxiety levels as measured by psychophysiological data. This study was conducted with 70 second-year undergraduate students, who were divided into upper and lower mathematics anxiety groups by pre-questionnaire. After the pre-test, the subjects studied the experimental lecture video and were asked to conduct a post-test, by which their achievements were measured. Their cognitive loads, which are known as well-established indicators of cognitive efficiency, were measured by the pupil sizes while solving the post-test items. The results showed that post-test scores and performance efficiencies were significantly higher in the lower mathematics anxiety group than higher mathematics anxiety group. Also, the lower mathematics anxiety group had a confirmed tendency toward smaller pupil size. Therefore, such result suggests that the performance efficiency measured by psychophysiological data can be used as an indicator to diagnose teaching and learning toward personalized prescription considering the level of mathematics anxiety of learners in online learning environment. Based on the results, instructional implications were discussed.
