Abstract

Grounded in self-determination theory, this study mainly aimed to examine whether the satisfaction of three basic psychological needs-autonomy, competence, and relatedness-moderated the relationship between perceived teachers’ motivating style(i.e., autonomy supportive and controlling) and students’ learning engagement. A total of 578 students(female=305) completed a multi-measure questionnaire. Hierarchical regression was used to examine the hypothesis. First, there was a statistically significant correlation between teachers’ motivating styles, basic psychological needs satisfaction(BPNS) and learning engagement. Specifically, autonomy supportive motivating related positively to students’ BPNS and learning engagement, whereas controlling motivating related negatively to them. Second, the relationship between teachers’ autonomy-support motivating and learning engagement was moderated by BPNS. It means that this positive relationship would be stronger when needs satisfaction was higher (vs. lower). Third, the relationship between teachers’ controlling motivating and learning engagement was moderated by BPNS. It also means that this negative relationship would be stronger when needs satisfaction was higher. This study thus highlights a potential value of BPNS underlying mechanisms between teachers’ motivating style and students’ learning engagement. Theoretical and practical implications were further discussed to enhance learning engagement at school.
