미국 초등 지리 교육의 실천적 특성 고찰 -캘리포니아 주의 두 초등학교를 사례로-

본 연구는 미국 초등 지리 교육의 실천적 특성의 일면을 고찰한 것이다. 사례 관찰 및 분석 대상은 캘리포니아 주에 소재하는 M, K 두 초등학교의 지리 교육 프로그램이었다. 분석 결과, M 초등학교에서는 ‘지리 교육 전문화 프로그램’이 구안되어 실천되고 있었다. 이 프로그램의 한 단위는 ‘주제 암시 - 본시 안내 - 교사 설명 - 학생 활동 - 수업 정리’ 등의 절차로 진행되었다. 한편, K 초등학교에서는 ‘지리 교육 일상화 프로그램’이 기획되어 실천되고 있었다. 이 프로그램의 한 단위는 ‘문제지 배분 - 문제 해결 - 수정 및 보충 - 학부모와의 공유’ 등의 과정으로 전개되었다. 또한 학생들로 하여금 지리 교육 자료에 일상적으로 노출될 수 있도록 지리 친화적인 교실 환경을 조성하고 있었다. 이와 같은 방식으로 미국 캘리포니아 주의 두 사례 초등학교에서는 각각 지리 교육의 전문화 및 일상화를 추구하는 실천적 특성을 보였다.
Abstract
This paper aims at illuminating the practical features in the elementary geography in the USA. The geography programs of M, K elementary schools in California state were observed and analysed as a cases. The specialized geography programs were practiced systematically in M School. A module of these programs was developed in order; suggesting - guiding - explaining - working - arranging stage. On the other hand, the daily practice programs of geography were carried out in K School for the geographic literacy. An unit of these programs was unfolded step by step; worksheet distributing - problem solving - supplementing - sharing stage. And this school has made students to be daily exposed to a teaching materials for geography. In these ways two elementary schools have the practical features pursuing respectively a specialization and a daily practice of geographical education.
