Abstract

The purpose of this study was to improve the quality of online class in university by analyzing the conceptions of excellent online classes of instructors and learners during the COVID-19 pandemic. To this end, a questionnaire and interview survey was conducted with eight instructors and eight learners. The results are as follows. First, both instructors and learners had the common belief that an excellent online class is one with active interaction and participation in learning activities. Second, it was also asserted that excellent online classes have various interesting contents, promoting active interaction and student participation, along with dynamic online communication and feedback with students, an evaluation of students’ thoughts and performance. Third, the instructors and learners presented separate additional characteristics of excellent online class. Fourth, the ability to use media and technology and to facilitate students’ participation was commonly noted as being part of the role of instructor. Fifth, self-directed learning and time management skills were commonly presented as being part of the role of learners. Sixth, learners were more willing to participate in online classes in the future than their instructors. From these results, implications for the improvement of online classes in university were presented.
