본 연구는 사회과의 언어가 그 역할을 충실히 하는지 점검하기 위한 기준으로 Halliday의 사용역 개념을 활용하여, 2007 개정 초등 사회 교과서 ‘지리·환경’ 영역을 분석하고 향후 교과서 연구자들에게 바람직한 텍스트 구성 방법을 제안하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 본 연구는 2007 개정 초등 사회 교과서 및 인정교과서/참고도서, 외국교과서에 공통적으로 수록된 사회과의 주요 개념들을 분석대상으로 하였다. 연구 방법으로는 사용역 개념을 활용한 체계기능 언어학의 분석방법을 사용하였다. 분석 결과, 2007 개정 초등 사회 교과서 ‘지리·환경’ 영역 텍스트의 특성은 다음과 같이 요약할 수 있다. 첫째, 개념의 속성을 많이 다루는 텍스트, 즉 사물참여자와 관계적 술어의 결합으로 구성된 문장이 많았으며 부가적 관계로 개념이나 사실을 나열하는 텍스트가 많았다. 둘째, 지도서 총론에 명시된 바와 같이 활동과 내용의 조화를 추구함에도 불구하고 활동을 독려하는 청유문보다는 평서문 중심의 서술이 많았다. 셋째, 다중설명부의 많은 사용 및 높은 어휘밀도로 보아 적은 분량에 많은 내용을 담고자 하는 의도를 알 수 있었다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is, by using the register concept of Halliday as a standard for testing whether the language of social studies textbooks is performing its role properly, to analyze the elementary social studies textbook revised in 2007, and to suggest appropriate text composition to textbook researchers afterward. The main contents of this study are analyses on the elementary social studies textbook revised in 2007, alternative textbook, and foreign textbook. For a study method, it used analysis method of systemic functional linguistic that parlayed the register concept. The characteristics of the elementary social studies textbook revised in 2007 analyzed can be summarized as follows. First, it had many sentences composed of combinations of object participants and tenor predicates, which deals a lot with attributes of concepts, together with many texts that arrange concepts or facts as additional tenors. Second, although it pursued harmony of activities and contents as specified in an introduction of a manual, it had more descriptions of declarative sentences than those of suggestive sentences which encourage activities. Third, inferring from many uses of multiple rheme structure and high lexical density, it could be learned that it intended to contain lots of contents in a small volume.
