Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate and suggest multiscalar approach to primary geography education in order to build balanced region recognition. Multiscalar approach is a geographical frame of recognition that regards a region as a spatial unit which consists of diverse and multi-level scales, which is expected to break out of the problem of the fixed region recognition of a single scale that is, the problem of recognizing regions fixed to a certain scale in geography education. In particular, it is highly significant to apply multiscalar approach to primary geography education, where they lay the foundation of region recognition. Therefore, this study analyzes geographical and pedagogical meanings of multiscalar approach, and based on them, composes actual regional learning activities of multiscalar approach. This learning activity is designed to induce cognitive dissonance from the conflict between students’ recognition of a single scale and multiscalar approach to a region, for effective learning. By presenting practical examples of multiscalar regional learning activities on African climate patterns, this study tries to find a solution for students to overcome a fixed idea on Africa as a continent of the only tropical and dry climates and recognize the region where they can observe diverse climate patterns on various scales. To continue applying and sustaining multiscalar approach to geography education can contribute to achievement of the goal of geography education: to build balanced region recognition and understanding on various regions in the world.
