본 연구에서는 어린이의 생활 글에 기술되어 있는 장소 경험의 유형과 그 특성을 파악해보고, 그것이 초등지리 교육과정에 주는 함의를 논의해보고자 하였다. 연구 대상인 광주광역시 서구 C 초등학교의 5학년 한 학급의 20명 어린이들이 2017년 4월부터 8월까지 5개월 동안 쓴 생활 글을 수집하고, 수집된 어린이의 생활 글에서 장소 경험과 관련된 내용을 분석함으로써 어린이들의 장소 경험의 유형을 파악하였다. 그리고 추가적인 연구가 필요하다고 판단된 어린이의 장소 경험에 대한 상황과 맥락을 더 자세히 알기 위해 그 어린이들을 대상으로 관찰과면담을 실시하였다. 본 연구를 통해 얻은 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 어린이들이 하는 장소 경험 중 직접 경험에 의한 장소 경험의 수에 비해 간접 경험에 의한 장소 경험의 수가 현저히 적었다. 둘째, 어린이들이 장소 경험을 할 때에는 여러 감각을 함께 사용하는 경우가 많고, 단일 감각으로는 미각에 의한 장소 경험에 더 많은 의미를 부여하고 있었다. 셋째, 어린이들이 하는 장소 경험 중 가족과 함께하는 장소 경험이 차지하는 비중이 가장 높지만 친구들과 하는 장소 경험 역시 상당 부분을 차지하고 있다는 것이 드러났다. 넷째, 어린이들은 마을 내에서 다양한 경험을 하며 살아가고 있고, 드물지만 일부 어린이들은 세계범위의 장소 경험도 하고 있었다. 다섯째, 어린이의 장소 경험에 어린이의 학업 성취도를 비롯한 장소 인식 정도와 성격, 현재 가지고 있는 고민, 걱정 등도 어느 정도 기여하고 있었다. 여섯째, 어린이의 체험 및 경험의 중요성에 대한 인식이 증가했으나 부모의 현실적인 상황으로 인해 다양한 기관에서 이 역할을 일부 대신하고 있었다. 일곱째, 도시에 사는 어린이들은 놀이터, 공원과 같은 단순한 시설 외에 플레이방, 낚시카페처럼 새로운 놀이 장소와 카페, 잡화점, 대형마트 등 어른들의 생활 편의 시설이나 문화 시설 등을 이용하고 있었다. 여덟째, 인터넷 속의 가상공간도 어린이들의 장소 경험 대상이 되고 있었다.
Abstract
This study aims to grasp the types and characteristics of the experience of places described in children’s writings in everyday life and to discuss the implications to the elementary geography curriculum. I collected the writings in everyday life of 20 5th graders (subjects of this study) of a class in C Elementary School in Seo-gu, Gwangju, written for five months from April to August 2017 and analyzed the details related with the experience of places in life. In this way, I identified the children’s place experience types. To grasp the situations and context of the children’s experience of places judged as requiring additional research, observations and interviews were carried out targeting the children. The results of this study are presented below : First, the experience of places by indirect experience was far smaller than the experience of places by direct experience. Second, when children experience places, they used various senses in many cases, and they gave a greater meaning to the experience of places by taste in terms of a single sense. Third, although there were the most experiences of places visited together with family, those experiences with friends took up quite a portion as well. Fourth, the children have lived diversely experiencing within their villages, and some children had experiences of foreign places, despite low ratio. Fifth, the children’s academic achievements, cognitive development level including place perception level, and character, worries, and concerns contributed to their experience of places to some degree. Sixth, although the perception on the importance of children’s experience increased, various institutions partially played this role instead of their parents, due to parents’ realistic situations. Seventh, children living in cities used new play places including play rooms and fishing cafes, and also adults’ convenience facilities and cultural facilities, such as cafes, general stores, and large discount stores. Eighth, the virtual world on the Internet became the subject of the children’s experience of places.
