미국 세계지리 교과서에 나타난 한국관련 내용의 분석

미국에서 가장 채택율이 높은 세계지리 교과서 3권을 선택하여 한국관련 내용을 분석하였다. 미국 세계지리 교과서에서 한국 관련 내용은 과거의 교과서에 비해서 많은 좋아졌다고 볼 수 있다. 한국 관련 내용이 미국이나 강대국 중심에서 많이 벗어나고, 사실적 오류도 많이 시정되고 있다. 사실적 오류로는 한국어, 사회현상의 기초 통계, 고대사, 동해 표기, 그리고 시대에 뒤떨어진 사진 등이 대표적이다. 한국어가 중국어의 일부나, 고대사가 중국의 지배를 받은 것으로, 동해가 일본해로 표기되는 것이 그것이다. 국제이해적 관점에서는 한반도가 주변화가 되어서 한국관련 내용이 적게 다루어지고 있었다. 그리고 한국을 독립적인 장으로보다는 일본과 함께 다루어짐으로써 한국이 상대적으로 소홀히 다루어지고 있다. 세계시민적 관점에서는 일본의 식민주의적 관점, 미국 중심의 사고가 대표적인 문제점으로 나타났다. 이는 사실적 관점이나 양적 관점보다 훨씬 심각하다고 볼 수 있다. 그 이유는 이 관점에는 교과서를 기술하는 사람들이 가지는 세계관이자 그 국민들이 가지는 세계관이 반영되기 때문이다.
Abstract
I analyzed Korea of three world geography textbooks in USA. I knew that Korea Contents in these textbooks was improved than the last textbooks. The fallacy of Korea contents and 'USA based perspective' were revised in world geography textbooks. But still there are factual fallacies about Korean, basic statistics of Korean society, old history, East Sea, and old pictures. In international understanding perspective, Korea was marginalized and alloted in a little volume in USA textbooks. The reason is that Korea is not dealt with independent sections but with Japan. And in world citizenship perspective, there are the colonialistic and American based attitudes toward Korea. I think that world citizenship perspective is serious than the factual fallacy and quantitative perspective, because it is cannot be changeable probably and reflected in authors and people's view of Korea.
