Abstract

The main purpose of this study is to report how Korea is treated in American world history textbooks. The textbooks examined in this project were widely adopted in 21 states. This study mainly examined the images the textbooks conveyed by centralizing or marginalizing specific aspects of Korean cultural features and historical experiences. Few errors and distortions were found. However, problems are found in constructing the contents of Korea in terms of the representativeness and appropriateness whereas they tend to emphasized the treasured heritage of Korean culture. The numbers of pages devoted to Korea is less than those to China or Japan. Furthermore, many textbooks emphasized Korea's cultural dependency on China and its colonial experiences rather than its cultural creativeness and independent historical trajectory.
