영문판 세계 지역지리 교과서에 나타난 ‘한국’에 대한 기술 변화

본 연구는 한국을 국가 단위로 기술하고 있는 세계 지역지리 교과서를 분석하여, 한국에 대한 기술 특성 및 변화를 살펴보았다. 본 연구에서 밝혀진 내용을 정리하면, 첫째, 한국에 대한 기술 비중은 평균 2.8쪽 분량으로 책 전체의 약 0.46%를 차지한다. 그리고 지역 범주화 방법에서는 한국을 일본과 묶어서 분류하는 방법과 중국의 주변국의 하나로 분류하는 방법을 사용하고 있다. 둘째, 내용 영역별 특성에서는, 먼저 지정학적인 측면에서 과거의 사실과 동아시아 범위에서 기술하다가, 한반도 중심으로 기술 내용이 변화하고 있다. 문화역사적 측면에서는 기술내용의 양이 감소하고 있으며, 한국이 민족적, 언어적, 문화적으로 독립적이라는 점과 남북한의 동질성 존재의 인식 측면에서 기술 내용이 일치하고 있다. 자연지리적 측면에서는 남북한의 경계를 의식하지 않고 한반도 전체를 하나의 지역으로 설정하여 설명하고 있으며, 인구분포 및 농업생산 등과 연계시켜 기술하고 있다. 인문지리적 측면에서는 남한은 농업, 북한은 공업이 발달한 점을 중심으로 남한과 북한의 ‘지리적 보완성’의 개념으로 남북한을 동등한 수준에서 비교 기술이 이루어지다가, 1990년대 이후에는 남한은 경제성장 중심의 긍정적 측면을 중심으로 기술하는데 비하여, 북한은 정치적 측면 중심의 부정적인 기술로 변화하였다.
Abstract
This study analyze the descriptive transition of the World Regional Geography textbooks which are described Korea as a national unit. The research results can be summarized as follows. First, the description share about Korea is accounts for 0.46% in the total pages, and average 2.8 pages. And the region categorization of Korea is classified with Japan or one of the peripheral nations around China. Second, in analysis of the 4 contents area, geopolitical aspects are changed the focus from East Asia regional scale and past facts to Korean peninsular scale and present facts. The cultural and historical aspects are reduced the amount of descriptive information. But there are the same prospective, Korea has independent in political and cultural and has a cultural identity over two Koreas. The physical geographic aspects are explained as one region the Korean Peninsula without division border. And it is described focus on relationship between natural conditions and population distribution or agricultural production. The human geographic aspects are compared the South with North Koreas at the same level, as the concept of ‘geographic complementarity’ in the past. But the descriptive focus are changed which is economic growth and affirmative aspects of South Korea and political and negative aspects of North Korea from the 1990s.
